Piltdown Hoax
The Piltdown fossil was found around 1907 in England and presented to the world in 1912, but it later turns out that it was a hoax and Charles Dawson was the one responsible. It was not until 1953, that scientists realized it was a fraud. It was only when a scientist at the University of Oxford used their new technology to discover that the bones were different ages. The “supposed” scientific significance would have been that it would supported the hypothesis that humans evolved from apes. The response from the science community was diverse where some believed that the fossil was genuine, while others criticized it because they were not sure that the jawbone and the skull belonged to the same creature.
Some of the faults that contributed to the negative impact to the scientific process was greed, jealousy, and pride. In Germany, Spain, and France, many Neanderthal (evidence of early man) were being discovered in large quantities and Britain was starting to feel left out. Greed comes into play when Britain believes that it has found the fossil that would connect the relationship between man and apes that backs Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Dawson was so desperate to make his name known that he forged artifacts that he had found. He was intelligent enough to do it though in a way that it answers scientists’ questions. Scientists look for the answers that they want.
The hoax was discovered thanks to the new technology at the time, fluorine dating. Fluorine dating is a process where groundwater is poured on the bones and older bones absorb the fluoride in it much more rapidly than recent bones. This showed how there were many bones of different ages. Also, they found a putty substances at the end of the bones which were used to cover up the cracked parts of the skull or “mistakes” that had been made when forging it. There were also pebbles stuffed inside in order to weigh the skull down since fossilized bones are heavier than recent ones.
I would not want to remove the human factor from science because even though humans make errors and are tempted at times, they are still the most driven to find discoveries and answers to their questions. Without the curiosity of humans, many questions would not have even been raised, hence many discoveries would not have been made by determined scientists.
A lesson that I have learned from this historic event is to not trust evidence that has not come from a reliable source. If you or a professional cannot verify its legitimacy then I would not trust it because the repercussions can be costly, not only to me, but to the world.
Hi Maribelle,
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see now why many people would have doubt, when it came to science back in the days after the huge fraud that was believed to be true for many years, until proven wrong later in 1953. But, we have to understand that it was easier to make these frauds because there wasn't much of the technology that we have today to prove something wrong. Now a days with all the new technology that we have today like you metioned , it would be really hard to create such a big fraud. Yes, people can still make mistakes but a fraud would be harder to commit now a days. Having reliable resources is definitely very important when it comes to proving something, and if there is no reliable source then it should continue to be examined until it is reliable.
Nice explanation on how fluoride dating process works. I didn't know that the fossilized bones weigh more. It sounds unbelievable now that they were adding pebbles to make the bones heavier.
ReplyDeleteSo much energy and effort put into a hoax.
"Charles Dawson was the one responsible"
ReplyDeleteActually, we still aren't sure to this day who is responsible. Dawson might have been behind this or he might have been a dupe. We don't know.
Regarding significance:
"The “supposed” scientific significance would have been that it would supported the hypothesis that humans evolved from apes."
Well, first of all, humans ARE apes. :-) So how do we arise from ourselves?
By this time, it wasn't really an issue as to whether humans and non-human apes (see how I phrased that?) were related. It wasn't about "if" they were genetically related, but how humans had evolved from that common ancestor with non-human apes. So what would this discovery have taught us about "how" humans evolved? Why was the size of the Piltdown cranium relative to the comparatively "primitive" nature of the Piltdown jaw? Piltdown was characterized by large cranium combined with other more primitive, non-human traits, suggesting that the larger brains evolved relatively early in hominid evolutionary process. We now know this to be incorrect, that bipedalism evolved much earlier with larger brains evolving later, but Piltdown suggested that the "larger brains" theory, supported by Arthur Keith (one of the Piltdown scientists) was accurate.
This is quite an involved story and more detail should have been provided for your reader. Who else was involved? What bones were found? Can you describe them? What happened in the interim of those 40 years before the hoax was uncovered?
I agree with the faults you list, but other than the culprits, can you find fault with anyone else? How about the scientific community? Why did they accept this find so readily without proper scrutiny? What might have inspired them (particularly the British scientists) to not do their jobs properly when it came to this particular fossil? Could that issue of national pride play into this as well?
Good job explaining the process that uncovered the hoax. But why were scientists still studying this find some 40 years after it was uncovered? What aspect of science does that represent?
"Without the curiosity of humans, many questions would not have even been raised..."
Precisely. Could you even do science without human curiosity and ingenuity?
Good life lesson.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should only trust information that we get from reliable sources, but I don't necessarily think that this was the issue in the case of the Piltdown hoax. The whole reason the hoax lasted so long was because the source of the information was supposed to be reliable. Well known scientists verified the Piltdown Man. I think the real lesson is that even if the source of information is reliable, we should still be sure to verify things ourselves.
